SCIS was founded in 1996 by the International Schools Foundation. ISF operates five international schools: two in Shanghai, and one each in Hangzhou, Jakarta, and Cape Town. ISF is a non-profit (501 C-3) organization located in Lansing, Michigan and operated by an appointed Board of Governors.

SCIS-HIS currently has over 2,200 students enrolled in nursery through grade 12, across five campus locations.

SCIS-HIS has a dedicated and talented group of educators on each campus. They are a diverse team who come mainly from the USA, Canada, England, New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa.

SCIS-HIS is based on the American system (grade levels, similar structure of class offerings, daily schedule and yearly calendar); school hours for student attendance is 8:00 am - 3:00 pm, Mondays through Fridays.

The curriculum is international (based on an American framework, but incorporating standards from many Western countries: USA, England, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand); materials are largely from the U.S., but also include materials from other countries.
